YouTube Thumbnail Size: The Complete Guide (2026)

Your thumbnail is the single biggest factor a viewer sees before deciding to click. YouTube itself repeats it constantly: thumbnail + title determine your click-through rate (CTR), and CTR feeds the algorithm. Getting the size and format right is the easy part of that equation — this guide covers everything in one place.

The recommended upload size: 1280×720

When you upload a custom thumbnail, YouTube asks for an image that is:

• 1280×720 pixels (width × height) — the resolution YouTube treats as “maxres”
• 16:9 aspect ratio — the shape of every standard YouTube player
• At least 640 pixels wide — below this, YouTube may reject or heavily compress the image
• Under 2 MB (2 MB for videos, 10 MB for podcast cover art)
• JPG, PNG or GIF (non-animated) — PNG preserves text and flat colors best

Upload at exactly 1280×720 when you can. Larger 16:9 images (e.g. 1920×1080) also work — YouTube downscales them — but they gain you nothing visually and risk crossing the 2 MB limit.

Every thumbnail size YouTube actually stores

For each video, YouTube generates a fixed ladder of thumbnail files. These are the exact resolutions you can retrieve for any public video:

The thumbnail URL format

Every thumbnail lives at a predictable URL built from the video ID:

Why maxresdefault sometimes doesn’t exist

The HD 1280×720 file is only generated when the uploaded thumbnail (or source video) supports it. Very old videos, some auto-generated uploads, and certain live streams never received one — requesting the URL returns a 404. The other sizes (hqdefault and below) exist for essentially every public video, which is why our tool automatically falls back to the next size when HD is missing.

What about YouTube Shorts?

Shorts are vertical (9:16), and YouTube picks a frame from the video as the Shorts-feed cover. You can no longer upload a fully custom Shorts thumbnail on most accounts, but the classic horizontal thumbnail files listed above still exist for every Short and are what appear in search results and channel grids.

Design best practices for the perfect thumbnail

• Design for 200 pixels, not 1280. Most impressions happen on phones where your thumbnail renders barely larger than a postage stamp. Zoom your draft out to 10% — if the message survives, it works.
• Mind the timestamp corner. YouTube overlays the video duration on the bottom-right corner. Keep faces and text out of roughly the bottom-right 20%.
• Three words max. Large, high-contrast text beats sentences. Don’t repeat the title verbatim — complement it.
• Faces and emotion work. Human faces with clear expressions consistently lift CTR in creator experiments.
• Stay consistent. Recurring colors, framing or logo placement make your videos recognizable in a crowded feed.
• Export as PNG, upload once. PNG avoids compression artifacts on text edges; YouTube will create its own compressed variants from your upload.
